Center-Surround - Japan Fall 2022
Eric LoPresti has been awarded a grant by the Carnegie Corporation of New York to exhibit “Center-Surround” in fall of 2020, showing in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo at Koki Arts
This artwork uses the Japanese martial art of aikido to address a history and continuing present of near-apocalyptic conflict, via vigorous, generous and respectful practice. Thank you to all who contributed their energy and bodies to this project.

Center-Surround at Stevens Institute of Technology
Center-Surround will be exhibited as part of the Reinventing Civil Defense project, funded by The Carnegie Corporation of New York at the Stevens Institute of Technology from August 9-10, 2019.
Center-Surround is a multi-channel video artwork by Eric LoPresti, which uses intimacy of martial arts to reframe the global violence of nuclear weapons. As part of this event, the artist will speak about the concept and creation of this piece on August 9.

The Carnegie Corporation of New York and John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, via a joint project called Reinventing Civil Defense, will be funding an expansion on Center-Surround in 2019.
This grant, administered by the Stevens Institute of Technology, will enable additional exhibition dates at the in New York vicinity and beyond.

Superbloom
Solo exhibition by NYC-based artist Eric LoPresti examining the post-Cold War landscape of the American Southwest. Comprised of oil paintings, large-format watercolors, digital works and a multi-channel video (a new medium for the artist), Superbloom opens on October 4 at New Mexico State University Art Gallery. Center-Surround
Center-Surround is a two-channel video which juxtaposes a video of a multiple-person martial arts practice with an animation describing nuclear weapons explosions. Looping every four hours, Center-Surround uses the intimacy of hand-to-hand combat to reframe the impersonal violence of weapons of mass destruction.
In October 2018 Center-Surround will be exhibited as part of Superbloom.

What color is an atomic blast, and what does that mean for us in 2018? In this wide-ranging presentation, Brooklyn-based artist Eric LoPresti discusses his artwork, contemporary theories of aesthetics and how thinking about color vision can change our understanding of nuclear weapons.

Superbloom opens Oct 4, New Mexico State University / Las Cruces
NMSU has invited me to mount a solo exhibition at their spacious Las Cruces gallery this fall. Superbloom will include large format watercolors, a video installation and public events about the confluence of apocalypse and sublime in the American West.

Superbloom is a solo exhibition by NYC-based artist Eric LoPresti at the New Mexico State University Art Gallery opening in September of 2018. Sited a mere 97 miles from Trinity, location of the first atomic bomb, the exhibition outlines an expansive framework within which viewers can meditate on two increasingly relevant antipodes of human experience: the quest for aesthetic expression, and the threat of global apocalypse.

Curator Jacob Rhodes placed sculptor Amanda Browder and myself into an anonymous creative partnership he called a Forced Collaboration, requiring the creative destruction of each other's work. The results were revealing, eye-popping, and a complete surprise to each artist.
